Ubumwe Sport Initiative helped my dreams come true…

UBUMWE Sports Initiative is a non-profit organization that works in different parts of the country, including our district of Rusizi. Since USI began its activities in Rusizi, it has helped youth between the ages of 6 and 17 understand the values of unity and how those values affect their daily lives. The children take what they learn and share it with their families and neighbourhoods.

Through the game of basketball, the program helps children change their behaviour by teaching core USI values such as communication, unity, teamwork, trust-building, fair play, focus, and responsibility. Coaches also receive training in areas such as positive coaching, conflict resolution, and other important skills. As a result of the program, many children have shown significant positive changes in their behaviour. These changes have helped them improve relationships with siblings, parents, and friends by avoiding conflict and supporting others who are experiencing challenges.

In addition to learning USI’s core values, children also gain a deeper understanding of the tragic history of our country through the annual Walk to Remember event. This event takes place at all seven USI sites every April during the commemoration period of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsis.

During school holidays, USI brings together hundreds of children for UBUMWE CAMP activities. At these camps, children practice basketball while also learning unity values through small group activities led by coaches. At the end of the camp, parents and local officials join the children for what we call Community Day. On this day, children share what they have learned, tell their stories, and celebrate together with snacks and drinks.

As a coach, Ubumwe Sports Initiative has helped me achieve some of my dreams, including becoming a professional coach who is committed to helping children improve their basketball skills. For a long time, it was difficult for young people in Rusizi to access quality basketball training. Since USI began its work here, that situation has greatly improved.

Through USI principles, I have learned how to conduct myself during youth practices and how to behave positively within my family, including with my children and my wife. The program has also helped me support my family financially.

It is clear to me that if Ubumwe Sports Initiative did not exist, my dreams would not have come true. Ubumwe continues to develop young people’s self-confidence through the values we teach, the camps we organize, and the many activities and events connected to the program.

“If the Ubumwe Sports Initiative did not exist, my dreams would not have come true. Ubumwe helped me become a professional coach and empowered me to support my family while serving the next generation.”
