USI Youth Basketball Camps

USI hosts youth basketball camps in each participating district, providing safe, structured, and inspiring spaces for young people to grow. Two camps are held at every site—one for children ages 8–12 and one for youth ages 13–16. Each camp runs for two weeks during school vacations and typically serves between 160 and 180 children per location.

Interest in USI camps continues to grow every year. With limited resources—often only 6–8 coaches and as few as two basketball hoops per site—we are not always able to accommodate every child who wants to participate. This strong demand reflects the trust communities place in USI and underscores the need for continued investment in youth programs.

During camp, participants develop fundamental basketball skills while also learning USI’s core values and how to apply them in their daily lives. Basketball is used as a powerful tool to teach unity, teamwork, leadership, respect, and more.

USI’s core values are integrated throughout all camp activities, both through technical basketball instruction and guided small- and large-group discussions. These values focus on success at two levels: building strong, supportive teams and communities, and empowering each young person to succeed as a responsible and engaged member of those communities.

Values for success as a member of a team:

  • Respect yourself and others

  • Focus

  • Self-esteem & self-worth

  • Self-empowerment

  • Responsibility

Values for success as a whole team:

  • Ubumwe (unity)

  • Ubufatanye (teamwork)

  • Communication

  • Trust Building

  • Fair Play (sportsmanship)

“It was not only for basketball; we learnt also how to be proud of ourselves, to have hope of the future, how youth have to participate in decision making and giving our ideas in our societies.”
